Food System Planning

Community and Regional Food Planning
Dr. Deanna Glosser, in collaboration with Professor Emeritus Jerome Kaufman and Dr. Kami Pothukuchi, has worked to integrate food system planning into mainstream planning.  This effort has included the following key activities:
●  Writing the American Planning Association’s Community and Regional Food Planning Policy
    Guide
, which was approved by the APA Board of Directors in April 2007

This policy guide provides an overview of the latest findings and trends that illustrates why planners should become more engaged in the food system.  The policy guide then outlines seven general policies, each containing 3-6 specific policies which provide more detail, and specific examples of how planners can help to achieve that specific policy. The seven general principles are: The American Planning Association, its Chapters and Divisions, and planners support

1.    A comprehensive food planning process at the community and regional level

2.    Strengthening the local and regional economy by promoting community and regional food system

3.    Food systems that improve the health of the region's residents

4.    Food systems that are ecologically sustainable

5.    Food systems that are socially equitable and just

6.    Food systems that preserve and sustain diverse traditional food cultures of Native American and other ethnic minority communities

7.    The development of state and federal legislation that facilitates community and regional food planning, including addressing existing barriers

●   Following the approval of the policy guide, assembling a Food Planning Working Group to
prepare a Food Planning Implementation Plan to ensure these policies are achieved.

A long list of possible action items was assembled and prioritized.  Planners and other
professionals across the country are working on issues related to integrating food planning
into economic development and comprehensive plans, and more.
●   Publishing items to promote food system planning:

o    APA’s Food Planning Policy Guide in Action, published in the Summer 08 issue of Private Practice Perspectives, the American Planning Association’s Private Practice Division newsletter.
